Part 1

Recently, work in SEL has turned attention toward issues of equity and social justice. TSEL, Transformative Social and Emotional Learning, is a revision of the SEL framework that focuses on transforming inequitable systems and settings. TSEL is defined as “a process whereby young people and adults build strong, respectful, and lasting, relationships that facilitate co-learning to critically examine root causes of inequity, and to develop collaborative solutions that lead to personal, community, and societal well-being.” States nationwide, such as California, have incorporated elements of the TSEL framework into their instructional policies and practices, as well as created their own guiding principles aligned with the TSEL goals.
